Tips and tricks

Germination is a natural process that depends on the right supply of moisture, light and air. The motto is: neither too much nor too little.

First time cultivators should choose types of seedling that germinate easily, such as mung beans, cress, alfalfa or radishes. The best results are achieved with an Original bioSnacky germinator, which is available in several different models.

Seedlings will not germinate if…

  • they are placed too close together (see recommended amounts)
  • they receive too little or too much water
  • the room temperature during germination is too low or too high (ideal temperature: 18-22° C)
  • the seeds are of lesser quality

  • Unfavourable conditions (such as an accumulation of moisture, insufficient or excessive watering, incorrect room temperature or light exposure) can lead to the formation of mould. This mould has a musty smell and is not to be mistaken for the fine fibrous roots which may form.

    Basic procedure:
  • Never touch the seedlings with your hands (contamination).
  • Place the seedlings in a sieve and rinse under running water.
  • According to the germination method and type of seeds, soak the seeds for 4 - 12 hours or place them directly in the germinator.
  • Water once or several times a day, according to the type of seedling.
  • The ideal position for your germinator is a well-lit spot near the window, but not directly in the sun, with a room temperature of 18-22° C.
  • Harvest between the 2nd and the 12th day.
  • Mould is the biggest enemy of seedlings. It may form if the seedlings are of poor quality, the room temperature is too high, the environment too moist or there is insufficient air supply. If this happens, don’t give up – have another try!

  • Please observe the following points:
  • Keep all implements that come into contact with the seedlings hygienically clean.
  • Too much water is just as bad as too little.
  • Seedlings that secrete mucilage (cress, alfalfa) should be rinsed briefly, once only, and afterwards kept moist by spraying if necessary.
  • Keep the room well ventilated. If necessary, remove the seed trays and lid from the germinator several times a day to guarantee a sufficient supply of fresh air.
  • The room temperature should not exceed 20-22° C.
  • Only use intact, high fertility seeds. Seedlings that fail to germinate or are damaged can be gently removed with a spoon.
  • Add a few radish or black radish seedlings to prevent the formation of mould.
  • If the seedlings smell mouldy, they have received too much moisture. Throw them away. Clean the germinator with a mixture of water and vinegar, and leave it to dry in the fresh air.

Review bioSnacky

This sprouter is similar to the Bioset and Biosta which the latter does not seem to be available anymore.  Basic sprouter for small sprouting needs.   The trays need  to be rotated daily.   Lower trays receive “used” rinsing water from upper trays.  Plugs (siphons) tend to get blocked which means supervision is needed when rinsing or one might come back to find their sprouts sitting in a  tray  full of water.  Some seeds like alfalfa will need a water bath after sprouting in the bioSnacky to help remove the hulls.  General overview:  This sprouter has its limitations but can certainly be a good helper to start off with sprouting.

Review bioSnacky Jar

Its simply a sprouting jar with an integrated stand and lid.  A bit expensive but well designed.
